Physicians for the Environment was born out of concern for an increasingly unhealthy environment that threatens our health and the lives of future generations. About 1500 members, mostly doctors, but also dentists and veterinarians, as well as students, of these professions belong to it. Other people support the goals of the organization as donors.

The association was founded in 1987 and is organized in sections.

National issues are dealt with by the central committee and in working groups. Doctors for the Environment is a collective member of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE).

Physicians for the Environment publishes an annual journal called "Ecoscope". It has been published in French.
