To address this societal challenge, Novartis is making a portfolio of 15 products available to governments, NGOs and other public health stakeholders for $1 per treatment per month through its Novartis Access programme launched in 2015. The products in the Novartis Access portfolio have been selected from the World Health Organization's (WHO) list of essential medicines. They are among the most frequently prescribed medicines in these countries. They treat cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases and breast cancer. In addition to offering affordable products, Novartis Access also works with local partners to improve prevention and diagnostic capabilities.

The Novartis Foundation is a non-profit organization and part of the corporate responsibility portfolio of Novartis in Basel, Switzerland. The foundation conducts projects to improve health, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and in south-east Asia.
