Le nom « Oxfam » vient de « Oxford Committee for Relief Famine ».

L'organisation est fondée en 1942 pour que des vivres soient envoyés, malgré le blocus naval des alliés, aux femmes et enfants qui souffrent de la faim en Grèce.

Oxfam est aujourd’hui l’une des ONG les plus reconnues en matière d’aide d’urgence, mais elle met également en œuvre des programmes de développement à long terme auprès des populations vulnérables.

La confédération est présente dans près de 90 pays. Le Secrétariat International d’Oxfam est situé à Oxford (Grande-Bretagne) et des bureaux de plaidoyer sont à Bruxelles, Genève, New York, Washington DC et Brasilia.
